What is CAN bus?

A clear explanation of the technology that makes it possible to read and understand what is happening inside a vehicle.

The vehicle's nervous system

Every modern vehicle has an internal network that allows the engine, sensors, dashboard and onboard computers to communicate. That network is called CAN bus.

It works like the vehicle's nervous system, continuously carrying information about how each system is operating. Instead of installing a sensor for every metric, MyKeego connects to this network and reads signals directly from the source.

What information travels through CAN bus

CAN bus carries a large amount of information identified through standardized codes called PIDs (Parameter IDs). These codes make it possible to collect data that cannot be seen at a glance, including:

  • Engine speed and operating status
  • Actual fuel level and consumption
  • Battery voltage and charge status
  • Vehicle diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
  • Temperatures, pressures and other internal signals

Each make and model exposes its own set of PIDs, which can include hundreds of signals. Reading more signals creates a more complete picture of the vehicle.
